History of Banteay Srei Temple

Banteay Srei was consecrated in 967 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II. Unlike many major temples in the Angkor region, it was built by a courtier named Yajnavaraha, a respected scholar and royal adviser. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, with a smaller sanctuary associated with Vishnu.

The name “Banteay Srei” is commonly translated as “Citadel of the Women,” although its original historical name was Tribhuvanamaheshvara. The temple is especially famous for its intricate carvings, which display scenes from Hindu mythology, including stories from the Ramayana and other ancient traditions.
